How to write a good cv

Personalised and professional

For a recruiter, a CV is an identity card. Based on this document, the recruiter will decide whether or not you will be hired. It goes without saying that this document is extremely important, it needs to be clear and well-structured and it needs to jump out of the crowd. Below you will find some interesting practical tricks to keep in mind.

You can choose three set-ups for your CV: a chronological, an anti-chronological or a functional CV. Currently, the anti-chronological CV is the most popular type. It allows the recruiter to scan your CV and to easily get an overview on your most recent experiences. A functional CV does not mention any dates. This type of CV allows you to stress your competences and to explain them by adding your experiences. This type of CV allows the recruiter to quickly get a grip on your profile and your competences as you are highlighting your strong assets. You can however also add your weak points: knowing your difficulties is the first step towards learning & development.

Some practical tips :

  • Go for a professional lay-out, no images, no decorations
  • Use clear sections, bullet points and key-words, this allows others to scan
  • Be clear and to-the-point when describing
  • Stick to 2 pages
  • Adapt your CV to the position you are applying for
  • Stress your assets which are required for the position
  • Keep your CV up-to-date 
  • Mention your hobby's below, it gives an idea on your personality
  • Mention your mobile number and the best time to reach you
  • Take your time to record a professional message for your voice mail
  • Mention your whole career, even sabbatical years
  • Ask someone to check your CV


And certainly don't forget the following:

  • Make sure to keep the same structure in your sentences when enumerating
  • If you want to add a picture, make sure it is a professional one: no sun glasses, no hat, no holiday pictures
  • Putting words in bold or in italics is more clear than underlining
